Publication Open Access Âmin Alayı ve Resimlerde Ele Alınışı(2014) Üstünipek, Mehmet; Üstünipek, Şeyda; 110512; 15545Sübyan mektepleri, Osmanlı eğitim sisteminde öncelikle çocuklara Kuran- ı Kerim öğretmek ve din eğitimi vermek üzere kurulmuştur. Bununla birlikte, Kuran’ı okuyabilmeleri için elifba öğrenmeleri öncelikli önem taşımış ve zamanla çeşitli dersler eklenerek düzenlemeler yapılmış, eğitimin içeriği çeşitlendirilmiştir. Çocuğun okula başlaması için özellikle varlıklı aileler tarafından düzenlenen ve Bed-i Besmele töreni ya da Âmin Alayı önemli bir gelenektir. Bu törenin ritüelleri, eğitim tarihi ve toplumsal yönleriyle çeşitli araştırmalarda ele alınmıştır. Yazılı kaynakların yanı sıra yabancı ve Türk ressamlar tarafından üretilmiş resimler de birer belge niteliği taşımakta ve Türk resminde günlük yaşam konusu dahilinde özel bir alan teşkil etmektedirler. Onsekizinci yüzyılda Van Mour’un bu konuyu ele alan resimleri, bazı on dokuzuncu yüzyıl gravürleri ve Türk ressamları Rıfat Çeteci ile Malik Aksel’in çalışmaları bu geleneği farklı yönleriyle yansıtmaktadır.Publication Metadata only Art and the city(2020-04) PARSEHYAN, BESTE GÖKÇEToday, when we look at the planning of the cities, we observe that in general, most of them are trying to take quick steps to be "smart". "Smart city" has not yet reached a single definition in the literature. Smart cities, consisting of smart economy, smart living, smart environment, smart people, smart mobility and smart governance components, are of course technology-oriented. Technology is a tool, and therefore the expectation that technology will make a city livable on its own is unrealistic. Big data, the Internet of Things (loT), and information technologies play an important role in making municipal activities efficient, but their impact on livability is low. Although artificial intelligence has been developed, smart cities still need operators, engineers, architects and designers. Art should be the focus of city planning. Thus, the branding, livability and sustainability of a city becomes easier. But, the art institutions are ignored when designing smart cities. Public art is an issue that needs to be focused on at this point. Museums and public art are seen as community assets and makes cities livable. In this paper, the relationship between smart cities and public art will be examined based on "Art in Public Space" report prepared by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. Paris, London, Vienna and Amsterdam are compared with Istanbul. As a result, this study aimed to bring cultural policy proposals for Istanbul.Publication Open Access Digital Transformation in Museum Management: The Usage of Information and Communication Technologies(ASOS Eğitim Bilişim Danışmanlık Otomasyon Yayıncılık Reklam Sanayi ve Ticaret LTD ŞTİ, 2020) PARSEHYAN, BESTE GÖKÇEToday, museums are undergoing a process of digital transformation. Those museums able to properly manage this process will hold the potential of following and analyzing consumer perceptions and emotions. Information and Communication technologies are an important part of this digital transformation. This study aims to put forth the relationship between digital technologies and museums in terms of participatory technologies. The focus of the study will analyze at which stage private museums in Istanbul are at in the digital transformation process. The study is made up of three steps in order to measure the level at which museums utilize information and communication technologies. The first step takes place prior to the museum visit and analyzes the museums’ corporate websites. The second step is in relation to the visit of the museum, and defines the information and communication technologies available for visitors. The final step determines the social media presence of the museums after the visitation. The study analyzes the degree to which information and communication technologies are used by museums under the supervision of Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s General Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Museums in Istanbul. As a result of the study,the museums have been categorized under four categories: sleepers, social-oriented, visit-oriented and experience-oriented. Of the 62 museums within the framework of the study, 24% are sleepers, 36% social-oriented, 24% visit-oriented and 16% are experience-oriented. It is believed that the study will serve as a guide for museums which took part in the study so that they can increase the participatory experience of visitors.Publication Metadata only Does Doctors' Perception Of Hospital Leadership Style And Organizational Culture Influence Their Organizational Commitment?(Soc Personality Res Inc, P O Box 1539, Palmerston North 5330, New Zealand, 2014) Güney, Salih; Katrinli, Alev; PARSEHYAN, BESTE GÖKÇE; 26387; 7380; 3920Our aim in this study was to determine the effect of organizational culture on the relationship between perception of leadership style and commitment to the organization by identifying firstly how Turkish doctors perceived the leadership behavior at private hospitals and then assessing the level of their organizational commitment. We developed and then tested a research model that incorporated leadership style, organizational commitment, and organizational culture. We distributed a survey to doctors working at four private hospitals in Turkey (N = 98). We found that doctors' perceptions of leadership behavior had a statistically significant, positive effect on their level of organizational commitment. We also found that organizational culture did not act as a moderator in this relationship.Publication Open Access İnas Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi’nde Heykel Eğitimi ve Bu Okulda Eğitim Almış Heykeltıraşlar: Saime Rezan Ramiz Öker, Sabiha Bengütaş ve Nermin Farukî(İstanbul Üniversitesi, 2022) ÜSTÜNİPEK, MEHMET; Sokur, BüşraBu makalede Tanzimat sonrasında başlayan ve İkinci Meşrutiyet ile ivme kazanan değişim sürecinde kadınların toplumsal kazanımlarına değinilerek özellikle eğitim konusundaki gelişmelere yer verilmiş ve İnas Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi üzerinde durulmuştur. Okulun Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi’yle birleşme sürecinden sonrası makalenin kapsamı dışında bırakılmıştır. Buradaki heykel eğitiminin içeriğine değinilerek, Saime Rezan Ramiz Öker, Sabiha Bengütaş ve Nermin Farukî’nin sanatsal etkinlikleri ayrıntılı bir şekilde ele alınmıştır. Kadınların sanat eğitimi almalarını sağlamak ve orta dereceli okullara resim öğretmeni yetiştirmek üzere kurulan bu okuldaki eğitim temelde resim sanatına odaklanmıştır. Ancak okulda eğitimin bir parçası olarak İhsan Özsoy’un eğitim verdiği bir heykel atölyesi de yer almaktadır. Bu makalede okuldaki heykel eğitiminin içeriği saptanmaya çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca, okulda eğitim alarak heykel alanında sanatsal üretim ve etkinlikleriyle daha kalıcı oldukları saptanan üç heykeltıraş seçilmiş olup, bu sanatçıların yaşamları ve çalışmalarının ayrıntılı bir şekilde ele alınması amaçlanmaktadır. Arşiv, süreli yayın ve kaynak taraması ile elde edilen bilgiler doğrultusunda İnas Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi’nde heykel eğitiminin ayrı bir disiplin olarak ele alınmadığı ve resim eğitimini destekleyici bir atölye düzeni kapsamında gerçekleştiği anlaşılmaktadır. Bu atölyede eğitim alarak heykel alanında etkinlik gösteren isimler arasında, üretim ve etkinliklerinde devamlılığı sağlamış bu sanatçı kadınların; sanat pratiklerini ortaya koyarak, sanat tarihi yazımında eksik kalan konumlarını belirlemek amaçlanmaktadır.Publication Metadata only Intergenerational Leadership(2019-05-09) PARSEHYAN, BESTE GÖKÇE; 26387From Machiavelli up until today, leadership has been a topic researched by many social scientists. While leadership research has found scientific basis towards the end of the 20th century, today, there are still many theoretical evaluations undertaken. There is a lot of rhetoric regarding leadership; how to become a successful leader, what is effective leadership, what is the truth about leadership, unsuccessful leadership examples etc. These are written about in line with the experiences we encounter and experience in our daily work environment. The main problem today can be said to be as follows: How can leaders sustain long term success if followers are short term and moving through a revolving door? There are members of five different generations in ourworking environments: veteran generation (1925-1946), baby boom generation (1946-1960), generation X (1960-1980), generation Y (1980-1995) and generation Z (1995-2010). By working together, these different generations provide leadership to one another. As the veteran generation and baby boomers are slowly going into retirement, they are leaving their duties to generations X, Y and Z. At this point, generation Alpha will become part of the cycle. There have been four different scenarios developed regarding the type of leadership that will be in place in 2050 when the generation Alpha will become leaders: BioCircuity Leadership, High-pod Leadership, Automaton Leadership, and Murmeration Leadership. These four different scenarios have been designed according to the communication between generations and will be in place in 2050. However, at the moment, it is impossible to tell which scenario will dominate.Publication Metadata only Issues Surrounding Adorno's Methods of Describing Beethoven's Late Style(2020-03) Yıldız, Kıvılcım; 52929There are many complex issues concerning Adorno's analysis of Beethoven's late style has many difficulties to understand. Adorno combines his analysis of Beethoven's late style with his dialectic process of late-bourgeois philosophy. This paper will attempt to focus upon the problematic aspects of Adorno's way of describing Beethoven's late style. It will cover the analysis of some technical issues in the B flat Major Quartet Op. 130, one of the late Beethoven quartets, and it will also examine to what extent this quartet can be regarded as consistent with Adorno's negative dialectic process. Adorno examines the historical conditions of society; he uses musical analysis as a medium for reaching his philosophical conclusions. These conclusions appear interdisciplinary in character. He applies the terminology of philosophy, sociology and music in his discourses. In particular, it can be understood that he sees these technical languages, especially the language of music as keywords in his philosophical viewpoint. Adorno describes his philosophical approaches in Beethoven's personality, because for him Beethoven witnessed two historical oppositions: on the one hand, the formulation of bourgeois self-confidence is the most important event in history and Beethoven represented this movement in his second period style. On the other hand, during Beethoven's lifetime the bourgeois period experienced an important crisis and this crisis influenced Beethoven's music. There was a serious problem within society and there are traces of this destructive in Beethoven's music. The most important point for Adorno lies in Beethoven's unconventional attitude. It is crucial to question how Beethoven represents an attitude against tradition in his late style. He does not admit the formal boundaries and he reveals his subjective power, as Napoleon in his demonstration of his individual power against bourgeois society.Publication Open Access İstanbul sanat müzeleri ve sosyal- medya: Twitter örneği(The Turkish Online Journal of Design, Art and Communication, 2013-10) Üstünipek, Mehmet; TR110512Türkiye’de çağdaş sanat müzeleri son on yıllık zaman dilimi içerisinde kurulmuş ve sosyal yaşamda etkinleşmeye başlamıştır. Bu süreç, bir sosyal medya platformu olan twitter’ın doğuşuyla da örtüşmektedir. Müzelerin daha iyi bir toplum yaratmak konusunda katkı sağlamak ve bireylerin entelektüel gelişimine ivme kazandırmak gibi toplumsal misyonları doğrultusunda facebook, twitter, bloglar, networkler gibi sosyal medya platformlarından etkili bir şekilde yararlanmaları kaçınılmazdır. İstanbul’daki üç büyük sanat müzesinin twitter hesapları incelendiğinde nitelik ve nicelik olarak önemli dünya müzelerinin ortalamalarından farkları olmadığı görülmektedir. Her üç müzenin de Türkçe tweetlere eşlik eden birer İngilizce tweete de yer vermesi uluslar arası sanat ortamını hedef aldıklarını göstermektedir. Twitterı müze odaklı bir sosyal atmosfer yaratmak üzere kullanmaktadırlar. Takipçi sayıları dikkate alındığında böyle bir atmosferin varolduğunu ve gelişmekte olduğunu söylemek yanlış olmayacaktır. İstanbul sanat müzeleri ağırlıklı olarak dünyadaki diğer sanat müzelerinin hesaplarını takip etmekteyken çok az sayıda bireysel twitter hesabının takipçisidir. Buna karşılık önemli sanat müzelerinin hiçbiri onların hesaplarını takip etmemektedir. İstanbul sanat müzeleri pek çok önemli uluslararası serge düzenlemekte olmasına karşın bu durum kendilerini yeterince tanıtamadıklarını düşündürmektedir.Publication Open Access Leadership in non-profit organisations(2017) PARSEHYAN, BESTE GÖKÇEEmerging at the end of the twentieth century, non-profit sector has taken on a new significance. Non-governmental organisations, health institutions, educational institutions and museums are examples for the variety of non-profit organisations. Museums are defined as the symbols of national cultures and bridges uniting the past with the present. However, it may be suggested that this definition has lost its validity on a large scale due to globalism that penetrated into our lives in the twentieth century. Globalism and multiculturalism played an important role in the industrialisation of culture, and being the symbols of culture, museums assumed the form of dynamics within this industry. Accordingly, the concept of museum leadership gained importance. The increasing competition amongst museums makes leadership more crucial. Compared to other sectors, museums have not been studied enough in terms of leadership and the late, but the necessary attempt to improve museum leadership is of vital importance for cultural industry. This study first discusses leadership and non-profit organisations separately, and afterwards, it investigates into leadership in non-profit organisations. Lastly, it elaborates on museum leadership, which is a popular concept of the modern day.Publication Metadata only Musicians' Union; as an example of the institutionalization of networks in music(2019-04) Yıldız, Kıvılcım; 52929Musicians1 Unions which are partly autonomous and partly governmental, directed state funds and private sector resources. They aim at emancipating cultural policies from the personal choices of politicians over the use of funds, by means of introducing several arrangements. However, these umbrella institutions, which are responsible from allocation and supervision of funds, do not exist in Turkey. Such a union is clearly necessary in Turkey, to equip the members of the profession with legal and economical power so that they can act jointly, and to be more effective within the society. From this point of view, this paper will attempt to discuss several issues concerning the possible network opportunities of classical music professionals in Turkey.Publication Open Access Müzelerde İnsan Kaynakları Yönetimi(2017) PARSEHYAN, BESTE GÖKÇE; 26387Bu çalışmanın amacı insan kaynakları yönetiminin müzelerde etkinliğinin ve öneminin araştırılmasıdır. 20. yüzyılın başlarında literatüre personel yönetimi şeklinde giren anlayış, 1980’lerde insan kaynakları yönetimi yaklaşımına dönüşmüştür. İnsanla ilgili her konuyu ele alan yaklaşım, onun gereksinimlerini karşılayarak verimliliğini artırmayı amaçlamaktadır. İnsanın verimliliğinin artışı örgütlerin de verimliğini artırarak paralel bir ivme kaydedecektir. Örgütlerin sürdürülebilirliğini sağlamasında çalışanlar kilit role sahiplerdir. Bu nedenle, çalışanların işe alım süreçleri, eğitim programları, kariyer gelişimleri ve yetkinliklerine göre pozisyonlarda çalışmaları insan kaynakları yönetim sürecinin birer parçasıdır. Bütün kurumlarda olduğu gibi müzelerde de insan kaynakları yönetimi önem arz etmektedir. Uluslararası Müzeler Konseyi’nin yönetim planlamasında ilk üçte yer alan insan kaynakları, ülkemizde yer alan 224 özel müzenin sadece 4 tanesinde etkin olarak işlemektedir. Söz konusu 4 müzenin dünyadaki büyük müzelerle rekabet edebilecek nitelikte işleyen insan kaynakları yönetim süreçleri bulunmaktadır. Geri kalan 220 müzede ise insan faktörünün sadece müzede gerekli idari işleri gerçekleştirecek kişiler olarak görüldükleri ve personel yönetimi anlayışının devam ettiği söylenebilir.Publication Open Access Neoliberalizm ve Şehirlerin Yeni Kültürel Koşulları(Beykoz Üniversitesi, 2021) GENÇ, EDA AYLİNNeoliberalleşme sosyo-kültürel etkiler, siyasi öncelikler, yönetim zihniyetleri ve projeleri ile etkileşim ve kesişim içindedir. Bu özelliğiyle neoliberalizm hem bireysel hem de toplumsal deneyimlerle ortaya çıkan bağlam bağımlı ilişkiler ağı olarak tanımlanabilmektedir. Neoliberalizmin etkilerini anlatan tek bir tanımlama olmayıp, neoliberalizm gücünü “hibrit (karma) yönetim biçimi veya bağlam bağımlı bir düzenleme uygulaması” olarak ekonomik ve yönetim mantığından almaktadır. Neoliberalizm, günlük hayatımızda etkin bir güç olarak kendini göstermektedir. Şehirlere kültür aracılığıyla yabancı sermayeyi çeken; bienaller gibi uluslararası kültür sanat etkinlikleri, kentsel dönüşümle soylulaştırılan projelerle ya da İstanbul örneğinde küresel sermayenin artan hareketliliğine karşılık veren kentin 2010 yılında İstanbul Kültür Başkenti seçilmesi, bu etkiyi değerlendirebileceğimiz örnekler olarak düşünülebilir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, neoliberalizmin tanımlamasına kapsamlı bir tartışma sunarak, şehir kültür alanlarında yarattığı örnekleri değerlendirmektir.Publication Restricted Reimagining the Cultural Impact of Neoliberalism: An Analysis of Istanbul and Liverpool Biennials(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd., 2022) GENÇ, EDA AYLİN; Kennedy-Schtyk, Beccy; Miles, StevenBiennials are one of the most important stagers of contemporary art practices serving as spaces of reflexivity for artistic production, compressing a glocal sphere, offering a culturally inclusive debate. They play a key role in the global transformation of cultural production in a neoliberal age. Based on empirical data collected from the 15th Istanbul and 10th Liverpool biennials, this paper seeks to interrogate the role they play in the relationship between the cultural production and consumption of the arts. The paper presents an alternative perspective from which we can begin to better understand the cultural impact of neoliberalism. It is suggested, on this basis, that as glocal spaces of culture, biennials can generate culturally inclusive debates and participatory constellations offering a more democratic access to cultural participation. They are in this sense a discursive space and facilitate the opening-up of a critical space in which cultural policy can offer a more sophisticated means of critiquing the impact of neoliberalism on the arts world.Publication Metadata only Resim Çözümlemesi Üzerine: Jean Fouquet (1420-1481)’xxnin Melun Diptiğinde ”Güzel Kadın” Agnes Sorel(2015) Üstünipek, Mehmet; 110512On beşinci yüzyılın ortalarında Fransız saray ressamı Jean Fouquet tarafından saray hazinedarı Étienne Chevalier’nin siparişiyle yapılan Melun Diptiği, toplumsal ve tarihsel özellikleri, sanatçısı ve eserin malzeme- teknik, biçem, konu olarak incelenmesiyle ele alınmıştır. Resmin renkleriyle ortaya çıkan sembolizmi, Fransa’nın ulusal uyanışının bir yansımasıdır. Aynı zamanda resimde yer alan veya onlarla bağlantılı olan tarihsel kişiler, resmin dinsel içeriğinin ardındaki dünyevi niteliği ortaya çıkarmaktadırlar. Ulusal tarih ötesinde kişisel tarihlerin de bir resmin ilk bakışta gizli duran özünün tanımlanabilmesindeki önemi vurgulamak açısından Melun Diptiği örnek bir çözümleme olanağı sağlamaktadır.Publication Open Access Sanat Kurumlarında İnsan Kaynakları Yönetimi Çerçevesinde Örgütsel Davranışa Bakış(2019-04) PARSEHYAN, BESTE GÖKÇE; 26387Günümüzde kurumların en önemli sermayesi insandır. Çalışanların örgütsel davranış çıktıları, kurumlar açısından önemlidir. Artan rekabet ortamında kurumları zarara uğratan önemli faktörlerden biri de işgücü devir oranının yol açtığı maliyettir. Bu nedenle, çalışanların örgüt kültürü ile özdeşleşmeleri, örgüte karşı olan bağlılık düzeyleri gibi insan kaynakları yönetiminin kontrol altında tutabileceği örgütsel davranış boyutları önem arz etmektedir. Çalışma, sanat kurumlarında insan kaynakları yönetiminin davranış boyutunu belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Araştırma, İstanbul’da yer alan on sanat kurumunda gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma için gerekli olan veriler yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniği ile elde edilmiştir. Görüşmelerden elde edilen sonuçlar incelendiğinde; sanat kurumlarında insan kaynakları yönetiminin geleneksel personel yönetimi şeklinde uygulandığı görülmüştür. Örgütsel davranışa yönelik nicel bir çalışma yapmayan kurumların, nitel gözlemlere dayanarak veriler elde etmeye çalıştıkları saptanmıştır.Publication Open Access Sanat Organizasyonlarının Sponsorluğu ve İstanbul Bienali(2016) PARSEHYAN, BESTE GÖKÇE; 26387Günümüzde sanat kurumları, pek çok farklı dalda sanat organizasyonu düzenlemektedirler. Festival, sanat fuarı, bienal ve sergi gibi sanat organizasyonlarını düzenlemek finansal açıdan büyük bütçeler gerektirmektedir. Sanat kurumları, çoğunlukla kar amacı gütmezler; bu nedenle herhangi bir organizasyonu gerçekleştirebilmek için finansal destek bulmaları zorunludur. Devletler, güttükleri kültür ve sanat politikaları gereğince sanat organizasyonlarına farklı ölçeklerde destek olabilmektedirler. Ancak, sadece devlet desteği yetersiz kalmaktadır ve özel sektör desteğine de ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Özel sektörde yer alan kurum ve kuruluşlar, sanat organizasyonlarına yaptıkları destek sonucunda bir geri dönüş beklentisi içinde olurlar. Bu noktada sponsorluk kavramı devreye girmektedir. Sponsorluk, karşılıklı tarafların kazan-kazan stratejisine dayalı bir kavramdır. Organizasyonlara sponsor olan kurumlar, pazarlama stratejileri kapsamında genellikle kurum kimliklerini güçlendirmeyi hedeflemektedirler. Sanatın özel sektör tarafından desteklenmesi sonucunda sanat eserlerinin özgünlüğünü yitirdiği ve popüler kültüre hizmet eder hale geldiği yönünde eleştiriler gündeme gelmiştir. Sanatın meta haline getirildiği kapitalist dünya düzeninde özel sektörde yer alan kurum ve kuruluşların sanat sponsorluğu faaliyetlerini ele alan bu çalışma, söz konusu sponsorluk faaliyetlerinin sanat organizasyonlarına sağladığı avantajları ve dezavantajları irdelemektedir. Araştırma kapsamında sponsorluk kavramının tarihi gelişimi, sanat sponsorluğunun hangi yollarla gerçekleştirildiği, sponsorların destekledikleri faaliyetler sonucunda kazanımları ve sanat organizasyonlarının sponsor gereksinimleri incelenmiştir. Ülkemizde gerçekleştirilen ve uluslararası sanat platformlarında kabul gören en önemli sanat organizasyonlarından biri olan İstanbul Bienali, sponsorluk açısından örneklendirilmiş ve değerlendirilmiştir.Publication Open Access Sosyal Medya Her An Ve Her Yerde Görünür Olmak(The Turkish Online Journal of Design, Art and Communication, 2013-10) Eraslan - Uludağ, ReyhanYüzyıllardır, bireyin her an ve her yerde görünür olma isteği portre resim sanatı ile başlayıp fotoğraf sanatı ile yoğunlaşarak devam etmiştir. Günümüzde ise sosyal medya ile farklılaşıp doruk noktasına ulaşmaktadır. Sosyal medya resim, fotoğraf, video, film gibi görsel paylaşım ağırlıklı iletişimin yanında blok, mikroblog, forum, sözlük, sohbet, tanışma odaları gibi metin tabanlı iletişim ortamları şeklinde de kendini göstermektedir. Eleştirel kuramcılar; G. Deleuze, F. Guattari ve J. Baudrillard’ın 1970-80’lerdeki metinleri günümüzde sosyal medyanın kullanılması ile ilgili önceden yazılmış birer alt metin niteliğindedir. Özellikle Deleuze ve Guattari, “Kapitalizm ve Şizofreni” adlı iki ciltlik kitaplarının kurucu unsurlarından ödipalleştirilmiş temsiliyet ve öznellik tanımları ile günümüzde yeniden tanımlanan kamusallık türlerini öngörmektedirler. Aynı zamanda ikinci cilt “Bin Yayla” da söz ettikleri yüzsellik olgusu sosyal medya ile ilgili bir bakış sunmaktadır. The importance of strategically determining the values in the museums has been examined. While explicating the importance of Sun Tzu method in determining the brand, brands' reputation and moreover its meeting with sucess, step by step brand strategy, it also displays how much the brand strategy must overlap with the strategy of war.Publication Metadata only The Archive Challenge of Turkish Theatre(2019-04) ÜMIT, NAZLI MIRAÇ; 190431The General Directorate of State Archives in Turkey published Arşiv Belgelerine Göre Osmanh'da Gösteri Sanatları [Performing Arts during the Ottoman Era According to Archival Documents] in 2015 as a compilation of records dating from 15th century to 1920s, covering both the imperial and republican periods. The records vary in content [regular fees paid to puppeteers, storytellers, illusionists; licences provided for theatre buildings; prohibition of staging certain Shakespeare plays ... etc) and they were selected by a small group of senior officials working at the Archives. The publication is neither a critical study of Turkish theatre nor a historical narrative. The visuals of chronologically ordered manuscripts are given with their transcriptions and translations from Ottoman Turkish to modern Turkish. The preface; however, reveals the motives of the editorial board by giving a mild reproof to theatre scholars and practitioners who celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Dariilbedayi - the first conservatory which now runs as a state theatre- in 2014 with exhibitions, publications and memorial ceremonies without consulting the documents in the Archive during the preparation process. The group took initiative to work on these records for the first time in order to raise awareness and interest towards them. However, according to what I was told during the interview conducted with one of the editors, the reception was disappointing since the publication has not received any feedback from theatre scholars yet and the Archive's records on theatre have not been in use as much as they expected. The traces of certain discourses produced by westernisation, romantic nationalism, or ottomanism have been decisive in Turkish theatre historiography. Accordingly, archival research has often been hand in hand with what theatre meant for the historian or what conclusions he wanted to reach at. In some cases for instance, self-orientalism led scholars embrace widely accepted views on 'Islam and performance’ without any further debate on suggested evidences as they needed the exact before and after in their narratives. Or, the memoirs of foreign travelogues have been consulted more than the local records on regulations of coffee house entertainments as the latter’s credibility contradicts with the long-established bias against the history and theatricality of unwritten performances. This paper seeks to question the engagement of Turkish theatre historiography with archives and drawing on the above-mentioned case, it discusses the possible motives and results of that engagement.
